GAZIPUR, May 3: Several people have been injured as a Tangail commuter train collided head-on with a freight train near the Joydebpur Railway Junction in Gazipur. Ten train carriages were also derailed in the accident, which occurred around 10:50am on Friday.

The accident occurred in the Kazi Bari area of Choto Dewra, said Joydebpur Station Master Hanif Mia.

Five compartments of the commuter train and several bogies of the oil-laden freight train were derailed after the collision. Four people, including the loco master of the commuter train, sustained injuries in the accident.

The Station Master said the Tangail commuter train had left Tangail Railway Station on Friday morning and was heading to Dhaka after a stop at the Joydebpur Station. The train was crossing a line at the outer signal when the freight train crashed into it from the opposite direction.

Four people, including the passenger trains driver, were taken to Gazipurs Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital with injuries. Train service on the Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh train routes was suspended after the accident.

Locals say the Tangail commuter train was largely empty as it headed to Dhaka, which limited the number of casualties.

Personnel from the Fire Service and Gazipur Metropolitan Service have arrived at the scene.

Two station masters of Joydebpur Railway Junction Station have been suspended over the collision between two trains on Friday morning.

After the incident, Station Master Md Hashem, points men Saddam Hossain and Mostafizur Rahman were suspended. Earlier Friday morning, a Dhaka-bound Tangail commuter train hit a Gazipur-bound oil-laden train allegedly due to an error of the signalman on the south end of the railway junction in Gazipur.

A three-member committee has been formed to investigate a head-on collision between a commuter and a freight train at the Joydebpur railway junction in the Outer Signal (Kazibari) area of the district on Friday morning. The accidents snapped Dhakas rail communication with the northern part of Bangladesh.

Gazipur Deputy Commissioner (DC) Abul Fateh Mohammad Safiqul Islam said district administration formed the committee to find out the reason behind the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within the next two days, he added.

He said four units of the fire service reached the scene and engaged in rescue operations. Several people were injured, including the loco master (train driver) of Tangail Commuter.

Two platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed to assist in the rescue work of two trains derailed after a commuter train crashed into an oil-carrying train in Joydebpur Railway junction in Gazipur on Friday morning.

The information came in a media release signed by Shariful Islam, public relations officer of the BGB headquarters in Dhaka.

The paramilitary members led by BGB-63 commander would remain deployed to maintain law and order and assist in the rescue operation, it reads.
