Amid ongoing heatwave, the countrys secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical institutions are likely to reopen on  April 28, after a break of about one and half a months.

However, the universities will continue their activities virtually until further notice.

But, no decision to reopen primary schools   has been taken.

On Saturday, the decision to reopen primary schools would be taken, according to the Primary and Mass-Education Ministry.

On Thursday, Secondary and Higher Education Division (SHED) under the Education Ministry issued a circular regarding reopening the secondary schools, colleges, madrasas and technical education institutions.

SHED Deputy Secretary Mosammat Rahima Akter signed the circular.

Responding to the SHED circular, the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) on Thursday issued another notification including some emergency directives.

In the circulars, the education ministry and DSHE asked the authorities of educational institutions to keep their classes and other activities open on Saturday until further notice. As a result, the schools and educational institutions will take classes six days a week from next Sunday.

While talking to media early on the day, State Minister for Education Shamsun Nahar said that decision on extending the existing closure of schools and colleges prompted by heatwave will be taken on Saturday.

"We are not certain about the temperatures. It may go up or down. We have two days off (Fridays and Saturdays) and after observing the situation we will decide. Our minister will return home on Friday and then well take a decision in this regard," she added.

Replying to a question whether there is any alternative plan about taking classes, she said taking classes online  could be an alternative y but students in rural areas can afford it and decision will be taken considering all these things.

Later, the ministry issued the circular and following the ministry decision, the DSHE also issued circular.

The circulars, however, said that the daily assemblies at these institutions will remain suspended across the country until the temperatures get tolerable.

It also directed that all activities that expose students to direct sunlight will have to be limited.

The directive also said the schools and colleges can hold classes on Saturdays to make up for the  gap created by the closures till further notice.

On April 20, the government decided to keep all schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical education institutions across the country closed from April 21 to 27 due to the heatwave. The educational institions remained closed since third Ramadan, March 14.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a warning that the ongoing heatwave will persist for another 72 hours from this morning.
