Man gets life-term for killing grandchild in Dinajpur

A court in Dinajpur on Tuesday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for killing his grandchild at Phulbari upazila in the district in 2018.

Shyam Sundor Roy, the judge of 2nd Additional District and Sessions Judge Court of Dinajpur, delivered the verdict against Momtaz Uddin, 52, a resident of West Khajapur village under the upazila.
The court also fined him Tk 25,000 , in default, he will have to suffer more than six months in jail.

According to the case statement, Momtaz Uddin strangled the victim Miraz Qazi first and hacked to death on July 8, 2018 over family dispute. He then said that Miraz went into missing. Later on the next day, Miraz found dead in a ditch near the house.

On July 9, the victim's father Mahabubur Qazi lodged a murder case with Phulbari Police Station accusing four person.

The accused Momtaz Uddin then gave a confessional statement to a court under Section 164.

After examining evidences and hearing witnesses, the court delivered the verdict in presence of the convict, said Shah Mostafizur Rahman Tutul, assistant public prosecutor of the court.
