FENI: Two people were killed when a train hit a sand-carrying truck in Chhagalnaiya Upazila of the district on Friday.
The accident took place at around 8:30 am near Muhuriganj Bridge on a rail crossing of the Dhaka-Chattogram Railway route. The gate man Saiful is absconding since the incident.

Of the deceased, one was identified as truck driver Mizan, 32, son of Abul Howladar, hailed from Wazirpur Upazila in Barishal District while the identity of another could not be known immediately.

According to police and local sources, a sand-carrying truck was crossing the rail line near Muhuriganj Bridge of the upazila in the morning. At that time, a Chattogram-bound mail train ran over it. The two died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

Local people said the accident happened because the gate man of that railway crossing did not lower the gate barrier on the railway track on time.

Officer-in-Charge of Chhagalnaiya Police Station Hasan Imam confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

MUNSHIGANJ: A cattle trader was crushed under a train in Louhajang Upazila of the district on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Bajlu Mia, 55, hailed from Kushtia District.

Local sources said the Khulna-bound Sundarban Express train from Dhaka hit the man while he was walking along the rail line in Mawa Cantonment Check Post area of the upazila at around 9 am. He died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.

The deceased were identified as Rajia Begum, wife of Anwar Hossain of Majhipara area under Gaibandha Municipality, and Jubayer, a twelfth grader of a local college.

Witnesses said a woman tried to commit suicide by diving under the train along with her one-year-old son while the college student instinctively jumped on the tracks trying to save her and the child.

Local Municipality Councillor Abdus Samad Rokan said the woman was standing on the railway track to commit suicide along with her son centring a family feud in Adhorsha College Gate area at around 9:30 am.

As a local train from Gaibandha Station was heading towards the woman, noticing this Jubayer rushed to the scene and was trying to save the mother and her son.

Though the baby could be saved, the running train crashed into the woman and the college student, leaving them critically injured, he said.

Later on, locals rescued the injured and took them to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty physicians declared the duo dead upon arrival, the councillor added.
