Students call off protest after getting assurance from VC

After getting assurance from Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Nurul Alam that appropriate action will be taken against the university proctor and the provost of Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall, a group of demonstrating Jahangirnagar University students and instructors momentarily ceased the blockage programme.

Prof Anichha Parvin Jolly, one of the organizers of the platform Platform against Repression, confirmed the matter on Wednesday afternoon after holding a meeting with a delegation led by JU VC Prof Md Nurul Alam.

Prof Jolly said, "JU VC assured us that Proctor and Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall Provost will forcibly be released from their respective positions by March 18 if they do not voluntarily resign by March 17."
"We temporarily suspended the blockade programme as per VCs assurance. If our demands are not met then we will resume the programme," she added.

JU Registrar Md Abu Hasan also confirmed the assurance from the vice-chancellor. He said, "VC assured them that is why they suspended their blockade programme."

Earlier on Monday, the protesters laid a blockade programme demanding the release of university proctor ASM Firoz-ul-Hasan and Mir Mosharraf Hossain  (MMH) Hall provost Md Sabbir Alam from their respective positions.

The protesters demanded based on the allegations of negligence of respective responsibilities of the proctor and the provost over the recent rape incident on campus.
