The body of Rayhan Ahmed, who died in Sylhey police custody on October 11, has been exhumed for reinvesigation.

A team of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) alongwith executive magistrates Misbah Uddin and Sajib Ahmed exhumed the body from Panchayet Graveyard in Akhalia area in Sylhey city around 9am on Thursday.

Later, Rayhan's body was sent to Forensic Medicine Department morgue in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

Earlier, Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Baten, former investigative officer of Rayhan murder case, appealed to the court to exhume the body.

The 34-year-old Rayhan, a resident of Akhalia in Sylhet city, allegedly died in police custody on October 11.

Victim’s family alleged that Rayhan was beaten to death in police custody after police detained him. But, police claimed angry mob beat Rayhan to death suspecting him as a robber.

Rayhan's widow Tahmina Akhter Tanni filed the murder case with Kotwali Police Station.

On Tuesday, the case was handed over to the PBI as per the directives of the Police Headquarters in Dhaka.

On October 12, four police personnel, including SI Akbar, were suspended while three others withdrawn following the death of Rayhan.
