A case filed over the death of a young man in police custody in Sylhet has been transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
The case was handed over to the PBI on Tuesday as per the directives of the police headquarters.
SMP additional deputy commissioner (media) Jyotirmoy Sarkar confirmed the matter.
Rayhan Ahmed, 34, a resident of Akhalia in Sylhet city, allegedly died in police custody on Sunday morning.
Victim’s family alleged that Rayhan was beaten to death in police custody after police detained him. But, police claimed angry mob beat Rayhan to death suspecting him as a robber.
Rayhan's widow Tahmina Akhter Tanni has filed a murder case with Kotwali Police Station. But, she did not mentioned any name in the case as accused.
Meanwhile, Bandarbazar Police Outpost in-charge SI Akbar Hossain Bhuyian, withdrawn after the death of Rayhan, went missing.His mobile phone was also found switched off.
Earlier on Monday, four police personnel, including SI Akbar, have been suspended while three others withdrawn following the death of Rayhan in police custody.
