Heatwave about to strike country with renewed vengeance

The Met Office on Saturday forecast that the prevailing mild to moderate heatwave may turn very severe in the country.

Weathermen Md Bazlur Rashid predicted that the discomfort may persist due to increase of moisture incursion.

According to the Met Office, Rajshahi, Chuadanga and Pabna endured a very severe heatwave on Saturday while Tangail, Jashore, Bogura, Bagerhat and Kushtia endured severe heatwave.

Mild to moderate heat wave swept over in the rest parts of Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and Rangpur, Mymensingh and Barishal divisions and Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni and Bandarban districts.

The Met Office forecast, rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places in Sylhet division with hailstorms at isolated places from 6:00pm on Sunday.
 
The weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere in the country on Sunday.

Day and night temperature may remain nearly unchanged in the country on this day, said the Met Office.

Commencing from 6:00pm on Monday, rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places in Sylhet division with hailstorms at isolated places.

Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere in the country on this day, said the Met Office.

The highest temperature of 42.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in Chuadanga on Saturday.

The lowest temperature of 21.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Srimangal.

On this day, the Dhaka city endured a maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius.

At least seven people died of heatstroke each one in Tangail, Naogaon, Sylhet, Munshiganj, Barishal, Coxs Bazar and Dhaka city on Saturday, raising the death toll to some 40.

A 27-year-old man died of heatstroke at Munsirhat of Sadar Upazila of Munshiganj.

The deceased was Sakhawat Hossain Mukul of Bajitpur upazila of Kishoreganj. He was a sales representative at RFL.

Ferdous Hasan, a duty doctor at Munshiganj General Hospital, said Sakhawat was brought dead. He had symptoms of a heatstroke.

A 50-year-old rickshaw puller died from suspected heatstroke in Sylhet citys Chauhatta area.

The deceased was identified as Abul Hashem, 50, of Sunamganj, said Md Moinuddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station.

Abul Hashem fainted and fell from the rickshaw all of a sudden, around 11:00am, he said.

Traffic police and locals moved his body to a nearby police box, where he died.

Shahadat Hossain, Assistant Teacher of a Dhakil Madrasa in Naogaon died of heatstroke.

Visitor Motiur Rahman died of suspected heatstroke at Sugandha Point in Coxs Bazar.

Rickshaw puller Abdus Salam, 55, died of heatstroke in Dhaka city. Doctors on duty at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead at 11am on Saturday.

On Friday night, Salma Begum, 50, died of heatstroke in Tangail.
