54 detained on different charges in 9 dists

A total of 54 people have been detained on different charges in nine districts - Gazipur, Cumilla, Coxs Bazar, Chattogram, Netrakona, Dinajpur, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Rajbari, in recent times.
GAZIPUR: Two people were arrested on different charges in separate drives in the district in three days.
Police arrested a fugitive convict of 27 cases early Friday.
Arrested Mofazzal Hossain, 43, is a resident of Dhirashram Road in Samantapur area of the district. He is an accused in twenty-seven cases.
Mofazzal Hossain was arrested from Ashulia, on the outskirt of Dhaka, at early hours, said Utpal Kumar, sub-inspector (SI) of Gazipur Metropolitan Sadar Police Station (PS).
The SI said acting on a tip-off, a team of the law enforcers conducted a drive in the Dhaka EPZ area in the small hours of Friday and arrested him.
He remained absconding for the last 5 years.
Further legal action was under process against the arrestee, the SI added.
On the other hand, police, in a drive, arrested a union parishad (UP) chairman in the connection with a case filed over extortion and abduction from Sreepur Upazila in the district on Wednesday night.
The arrested person is Jahangir Alam. He is the chairman of Mawna UP in the upazila.  
Police arrested Jahangir at around 9 pm from the upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mawna Highway PS Mahbub Morshed said as soon the as the news spread, the supporters of Jahangir put-up barricade on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway protesting the arrest at around 11 pm at Mawna intersection and burned tyres, halting vehicular movement on the highway.
The vehicular movement on the highway remained halted till 2 am on Thursday.
However, being informed, police went there and brought the situation under control, said the OC.
On February 13, Zahirul Islam, manager of Fortune Cable Industries, filed a case against Jahangir and 12 others for abducting him and unleashing torture on him after failing to realise Tk 20 lakh as extortion, he said.
Legal actions are being taken in this regard, the OC added.
CUMILLA: A Rohingya teenage boy was detained by the members of Detective Branch (DB) of Police at Cumilla Regional Passport office while trying to obtain a Bangladeshi passport using fake name and address.
District DB Police OC Rajes Barua said the boy came to make his passport at the regional passport office at Noapara of the district on Thursday afternoon.
He submitted a birth registration certificate as the son of Zakir Hossain and Hasina Begum of Paschim Ghorashal Ward No. 4 of Muradnagar Upazila.
Over suspicion, when the officials asked his address, he could not reply properly. Later on, they informed the matter to the police.
During the interrogation, the revealed his identity as Yasir, son of Syed Hossain of Bolibazar area, and said he came to Coxs Bazar from Bali Bazar area in Myanmar 20 days back. Later on, the boy was brought to the PS concerned.
However, the law enforcers are investigating how the Rohingya boy got the birth certificate, the DB Police OC added.
UKHIYA, COXS BAZAR: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three members of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) from a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya Upazila of the district on Tuesday night.
The arrestees are: Abul Hashim, ARSA second-in-command, another ARSA man is the bodyguard of ARSA chief Ataullah Jununi.
Lt Col HM Sajjad Hossain, chief of RAB-15 Coxs Bazar Battalion, said on information, a team of the elite force raided the extension of Rohingya camp No. 20 on Tuesday night and arrested the ARSA members and seized foreign-made firearms and cartridges from the camp.
He further said that they had information that some ARSA men were planning for sabotage activities. However, RAB will provide details at a press briefing in Coxs Bazar later, the official added.
CHATTOGRAM: A total of 37 people were arrested on different charges in separate drives in the district recently.
Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) on Tuesday arrested another accused in connection with the death of a former officer of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Mohammad Shahidullah under police custody in Chandgaon PS on October 3 last year.
The arrestee was identified as Md Liton, 48.
A team of PBI arrested Liton from Chawkbazar area of the city, said Inspector Elias Khan of Metropolitan PBI.
Earlier, on December 25, PBI arrested Jashim, 37 from Bakolia area.
Police arrested former deputy director of ACC Shahidullah in a criminal case on October 3 last year. Later on, he fell sick under police custody and was taken to Park View Hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
Fouzia Anwar, wife of Shahidullah, filed a case against nine people including the then OC of Chandgaon PS Khairul Islam, two assistant SIs Md Yusuf, Sohel Rana and inspector Md Mubinul Haque with Chattogram Metropolitan Session Judge.
Earlier, RAB members arrested 30 pirates along with huge firearms and ammunition while they were trying to commit mass robbery in fishing boats in the Bay of Bengal early Monday.
The identities of the arrestees could not be known immediately.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-7 conducted a drive in the Bay of Bengal (Chattogram-Coxs Bazar coastal areas), and arrested 30 pirates along with firearms and ammunition while committing mass robbery in the Bay of Bengal using two trawlers early in this Monday morning, said Commanding officer of RAB-7 Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Alam.
The pirates were taken to the Patenga No. 15 Ghat, the RAB official added.
On the other hand, police arrested six members of a robber gang from the city recently while they were preparing for a robbery.
The arrested are: Arif Hossain Mehedi, Shorif, Mehdi Hasan Rubel, Saidul Islam Rigan, Hannan Hossain and Riyad Hossain.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive in Pashchim Madarbari area, and arrested them along with some lethal weapons while they were preparing for a robbery, said Chattogram Sadarghat PS OC Ferdous Jahan.
The OC said the law enforcers have also recovered 52 bhori of gold ornaments from a bush after questioning.
A case was filed against them with the PS in this regard, the OC added.
NETRAKONA: Members of RAB on Monday arrested a local leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) over killing of a tenth grader in Purbadhala Upazila of the district on December 11, 2023.
RAB arrested Roman Talukder, 29, the president of the upazila BCL unit and a resident of West Budhi area in the upazila, from the capitals Nawabpur area on Monday.
Meanwhile, the deceased was Rejaul Islam Titu, 16, son of Mohammad Ali, a resident of the aforesaid area. He was a tenth grader of Mojibor Rahman Technical School in the upazila.
RAB-14 Deputy Director (Operations) Md Anwar Hossain confirmed the information in a press release.
According to the case statement, one Billal Hossain (an accused of the case) was digging a land of the victims uncle on December 11 last. At that time, when the deceased asked them to stop digging, another accused Ayub Ali Talukder along with his cohorts locked into an argument with him. At one stage of the argument, Roman along with his cohorts started beating him indiscriminately, leaving Titu critically injured.
He was then rescued and taken to Purbadhala Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
After the incident, the BCL central unit expelled him from incident and the deceaseds mother Ayesha Begum lodged a murder case with Purbadhala PS accusing nine people.
Following the case, a team of RAB-14 conducted a drive in Nawabpur area of the capital, and arrested him.
The arrested was handed over to the PS concerned for taking further actions, he said.
Purbadhala PS OC Mohammad Rashedul Islam confirmed the matter.
DINAJPUR: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police claims to have arrested two members of a fraudulent ring that specialises in defrauding Mastercard and Visa cardholders by hacking into their accounts.
The arrestees are: Md Rabiul Mia and Nazrul Islam, residents of Bhanga Upazila in Faridpur.
They were arrested from Dinajpur, said a CID media release.
Acting on a tip-off, the cyber-crime unit of CID conducted a drive in Dinajpur and arrested the duo, it added.
During the drive, a total of 5 mobile phone sets and 10 active SIMs were seized from their possession.
Most of the SIMs are registered in the name of fake identities, added the release.
Several cases have been filed in different PSs of the capital in such incidents.
Rabiul and Nazrul were shown as arrested in a case filed with Ramna PS on January 23 last and sent to the court, reads the release.
KURIGRAM: Police detained two people in connection with killing an Awami League (AL) leader in the district town recently.
The arrested are: Rezvi Kabir Chowdhury Bindu, general secretary (GS) of Sadar Upazila BCL; and Jhinuk Mia, president of Kurigram Polytechnic Institute BCL.
Superintendent of Police (SP) in Kurigram Al Asad Md Mahfuzul Islam confirmed the matter.
The SP said a local AL leader was beaten to death allegedly by some youths led by Sadar Upazila Chhatra League GS Rezvi Kabir Chowdhury Bindu over an old enmity in the town recently.
The deceased was identified as Shariful Islam Sohan, 40, treasurer of the municipality unit AL and a transport businessman.
The incident took place in Khalilganj Bazar area of the town.
Following the incident, agitated transport workers blocked the major roads including Ghoshpara, Kanthalbari and Pateshwari in the town.
Later on, police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control.
Sohans friend Khandkar Redwan Mahmud said they were standing in front of the Abhinandan Convention Centre in the town.
"Suddenly a motorcycle lost control and fell in front of our car," Redwan narrated, "Then we rescued two injured motorcyclists and sent them to the hospital in an auto."
"Later on, when we were coming towards the town, some youths riding on several bikes led by Rezvi Kabir Chowdhury Bindu attacked us, leaving Sohan seriously injured," he added.
"We took Sohan to the hospital, where the physicians declared him dead on arrival," Redwan said.
Kurigram Sadar PS OC Masudur Rahman said that preparation was being taken to file a case in this regard.
PATGRAM, LALMONIRHAT: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have detained four Rohingya refugees from Patgram border area in the district recently.
The detained persons are: Abdullah, 24, his wife Sharifa Begum, 19, and their daughter 27-months-old Rinus Bibi and Amena Begum, 15.
Patgram PS OC Ferdous Wahid said the Rohingyas were roaming near the corridor post area of Dahagram Union of Patgram Upazila.
Finding them suspicious, the patrol team of 51-BGB detained them.
Later on, the BGB handed them over to Patgram PS.
During the questioning, the detainees confessed that they were citizens of Myanmar and residents of Ukhia Rohingya Camp in Coxs Bazar.
Earlier, the paramilitary force detained a Rohingya woman, named Ramida Begum, 21, while she was roaming in the Panbari border area in Kuchlibari Union of Patgram Upazila.
Necessary measures are being taken to send the Rohingyas in police custody to their respective camps, the OC added.
RAJBARI: Police recently arrested the main accused in the killing of a village policeman, who was on-duty in a polling centre, in Baliakandi Upazila of the district on January 6 last.
Rajbari SP GM Abul Kalam Azad confirmed the information in a press briefing in his office.
The arrested is Muktar Sheikh, 28, hailed from Jhaukati Village under Madhukhali Upazila in Faridpur District.
According to the press briefing, Muktar along with his two cohorts were trying to steal a goat from a house adjacent to Char Arcandi Government Primary School Poll Centre in the upazila, where the deceased Ranjit Kumar, 40, was on-guard.
When the policeman obstructed them, the arrested and his two associates offered him some money as bribe, but the honest Ranjit denied their offer and tried to contact with police. At that time, the accused strangled the guard to death twisting his muffler around his neck, said GM Abul Kalam Azad in the briefing.
Later on, the deceaseds wife Rita Dey lodged murder case with Baliakandi PS.
Following the case, the police department started investigating and they arrested the main accused. Police also recovered the auto-rickshaw, used in the killing and the goat which the accused had stolen from the house, he said.
During primary interrogation, Muktar Sheikh confessed to his crime, said the SP, adding that he also published the names of his associates and efforts are on to arrest the other accused.
Earlier, the village policeman was found dead behind a poll centre in the upazila at around 5am of January 6, one day before of the 12th National General Election.
