Rahul set to take over reins from Sonia?

NEW DELHI, June 1 : With Congress suffering heavy losses in the recently concluded Assembly Elections, Rahul Gandhi could be elevated as party president any time soon, a media reports.
Though, there is no official confirmation from the grand old party on the reports, sources said that Rahul will be elevated after Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet.
Moreover, reports suggest that Congress has decided to go for major structural changes keeping in view of the recent poll defeats in West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Also, it may be noted that the crucial Uttar Pradesh and Punjab elections are scheduled for next year.
The party is now in power only in six states. There has been growing concern in the Congress on a series of assembly election losses suffered by the party was it was routed in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Besides, Rahul's elevation, reshuffle of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office-bearers is also on the cards.
Of late, various Congress leaders like Jairam Ramesh, Shashi Tharoor and Digvijay Singh have openly advocated for change of guard within the party with Rahul at the helm.
Recently, Congress leader from Punjab and Amritsar MP Captain Amarinder Singh said time is apt for Congress president Sonia Gandhi to step down and hand over the reins of the party to Rahul and Priyanka Vadra.
The Gandhi scion is expected to include Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sachin Pilot and RPN Singh in his core team, which would have the final say in the decision-making process.
Sonia is at the helm of the party since March 1998 and has created a record of sorts by being the longest serving chief of the Congress.
Meanwhile, reacting to the reports Bharatiya Janata Party leader Shahnawaz Hussain said Rahul's elevation would help BJP in achieving the mission of 'Congress-mukt Bharat'.    ?ZEE MEDIA BUREAU
