On the occasion of the 86th birth anniversary of legendary folk singer Abdul Alim, IGCC organised an evening of songs by Nurjahan Alim Tuni at Kabi Sufia Kamal Auditorium, Bangladesh National Museum, Shahbagh in the city. The musical soiree was held on July 29. Nurjahan Alim Tuni, also daughter of late Abdul Alim, presented popular songs of late Alim----- 'Majhi Baiya Jao', 'Allah Megh De Pani Dey', Holodiya Pakhi Sonali Baron', 'Porer Jaiga Porer Jomi Ghor Banaiya Ami Roi', 'Sob Sokhire Paar Korite', 'Sob Nongor Chhariya', 'Bohu Diner Priti' and others at the show. Alim, known for singing diverse genre songs like Marfati, Murshidi, Jari, Sari and Bhatiali, recorded over 300 Gramophone records and did playbacks in over 100 films. He recorded songs for Mukh O Mukhosh (1956), which was the first ever Bangla language feature film made in the then East Pakistan. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Playback Singer in 1974 for playback in Sujan Sakhi. He was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1997 by the Government of Bangladesh. Nurjahan Alim Tuni initially got her inspiration in music from her father. Later she learnt music from other renowned ustads like Akhter Sadmani, Nazrul Islam etc. She also got trained in classical music under Ustad Anup Barua in Chhayanaut. Nurjahan was champion in 1986 in 'Notun Kuri' broadcast on Bangladesh Television. Her first solo album of songs titled 'Majhi' was released in 2014 and her second solo album 'Jare Chere' - a tribute to Abdul Alim, was released in February, 2017. She has received several awards like 'Abbas Uddin Sharok' 'Pen Pulse Club Award', 'Badshah Khalid Award', 'Progoti Shango Awrad', 'Abdul Hai Mashreki Gold Medal', 'Human Rights' and 'Peace for Bangladesh Award', 'Anotora Academy Award' etc. Nurjahan has performed in many stage shows at home and aboard like 'Boishakhi Utshob' in UAE, AEBA conference in Malaysia, Singapore and India, International Folk Fest in Dhaka etc. She regularly performs in Bangladesh Betar and different TV Channels of Bangladesh. Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre organised the programme marking Abdul Alim's 86th birth anniversary, which was celebrated on July 27.
