Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud today said the Dhaka Water Conference would significantly contribute to attaining the Sustainable Development Goal-6.

Speaking at a press briefing at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon here, he said the 6th one of the United Nations 17 SDG-2030 goals is 'Ensuring Safe Water and Sewerage System for All'.

Anisul said Dhaka Water Conference is very important as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become a member of a high-power United Nations committee on water.

A total of 83 representatives, including ministers and state ministers, from 23 countries are participating in the conference that began in Dhaka today, he said.

The minister said, "This water conference would help formulate future strategies to face challenges of safe water management, sewerage and sanitation of Asia Pacific countries."

Availability of safe water is gradually becoming a challenging issue around the world, he said, adding, "We are implementing different projects to remove water pollution, which eventually would help achieve targets of SDGs."

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Coordinator on SDG Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office Abul Kalam Azad said the Dhaka Water Conference would be able to find out solid recommendations and guidelines, which will contribute to achieving SDG-6 and other related SDG targets.

Earlier, a meeting of High-Level Water Panel (HLWP) representatives called Sherpas was held as part of the water conference. The meeting discussed about formulating a roadmap to mitigate scarcity of safe drinking water and sanitation problems.

On the last day, the conference will adopt the Dhaka declaration.

This year's theme of the water conference is 'Water in sustainable development.'

Four technical sessions on safe water, sanitation, water quality and water management will be held in the two-day conference.

Recommendations on eight specific subjects on water will be made in four sessions of the conference.
