Cyclone Mora destroys 52,539 houses in Cox’s Bazar

150 fishermen missing in the Bay of Bengal

COX'S BAZAR, June 1: The recent cyclone Mora has destroyed around 52,539 houses in eight upazilas of the district.
Of those, 17,023 houses have been destroyed totally and 35,516 destroyed partially.
Besides houses, different fields, crops and betel leaf orchards have also been damaged.
Relief and Disaster Management Department of the district administration has confirmed the information.
As per the statistics, the cyclone 'Mora' has affected all the eight upazilas of the district. But, Saint Martin and Shah Parir Dwip of Teknaf upazila, Kutubjom, Dhalghata and Kutubdia of Moheshkhali upazila, Pokkhali, Khuruskul and Samity Para of Sadar upazila have mostly been affected.
District administration control room sources said, four people died after trees fell on them during the cyclone 'Mora', while one more died of heart attack. More than 50 people have been injured. Besides, around one lakh trees were also destroyed.
More than 150 fishermen are missing as eight boats capsized in the Bay of Bengal.
The deceased were identified as: Marium Begum, 55, wife of Badiul Alam, of No. 6 Jetty Ghat under No. 2 Ward of Cox's Bazar Municipality who died of heart attack, Sayera Khatun, 65, wife of late Nur Alam, of Borobhewla area and Rahmat Ullah, 50, son of Abdul Jabbar, of Dulahazra Purba Dumkhali under Chakaria upazila, Abdul Hakim Sawdagor, 55, son of Azizur Rahman, of Ujantia Notun Ghona Pekuar Char under Pekua upazila, Shahina Akhter, 10, daughter of Shahjahan, of Gazalia village under Islamabad union in Sadar upazila.
As per the information, 4,270 houses were totally destroyed and 6,382 partially destroyed in Kutubdia upazila, 5,480 houses totally destroyed and 8,700 partially destroyed in Moheshkhali upazila, 200 totally destroyed and 1,015 partially destroyed in Pekua upazila, 252 totally destroyed and 1,196 partially destroyed in Ramu upazila, 50 totally destroyed and 200 partially destroyed in Ukhia upazila, 150 totally destroyed and 600 partially destroyed in Sadar upazila, 4,500 totally destroyed and 6,000 partially destroyed in Teknaf upazila, 1193 totally destroyed and 1,035 totally destroyed in Chakaria upazila, 535 totally destroyed and 1,092 partially destroyed in Cox's Bazar Municipality, 113 totally destroyed and 267 partially destroyed in Teknaf Municipality, 80 totally destroyed and 329 partially destroyed in Chakaria Municipality, and 200 totally and 700 partially destroyed in Moheshkhali Municipality.
Deputy Commissioner Md Ali Hossen said, "We took the highest preparation to face the cyclone 'Mora'. More than two lakh people took shelter in 538 shelters. For this reason, the casualty was minimum. But, houses, betel leaf orchards and trees were destroyed a lot."
He further said, "For the cyclone-affected people, 100 tonnes of rice and cash Tk 1 lakh have been allocated for each upazila. If necessary, more relief would be allocated."
