Prime
Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday warned lawmakers with cancellation
of their allocation of NAM flats, if they do not stay in their allotted
flats.
"Lawmakers who do not reside in their NAM flats but use it to
house personal staff, drivers or domestic help will lose their flat
allocation," she said.
The Prime Minister issued the warning while
inaugurating new residential buildings for officials and employees of
the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
Urging
all to be careful not to misuse the NAM flats, she said, "It is not
right to misuse it. Your allocation of NAM flats will be cancelled."
"Those
who took allocation of the NAM flats must stay there, otherwise they
will have to live in Nakhalpara MP Hostel," she said.
"If you stay in
the NAM flats, proper maintenance of the flats will be ensured. I told
you earlier at party meetings, but no one seems to be paying attention
to it, so, today, I am telling you publicly," she added.
Asking the
Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip to take action against flat related
irregularities, the Prime Minister said in case of his failure, actions
will be taken against the Chief Whip.
"I also seek opinion of the Speaker in this matter," she said.
Responding
to the remark of the Chief Whip that many NAM flats are now
dilapidated, the Prime Minister said, "It is true. Had the lawmakers
stayed in their NAM flats it would not have been damaged so soon but
since the person who are staying there are not very careful about its
use."
"Compensation will be realized from the lawmakers whose flats
are found damaged. None will be spared," she warned the errant
lawmakers.
The Prime Minister also expressed her dissatisfaction with
the poor maintenance of the parliament building and directed officials
concerned to protect this world famous architectural building from
damage.
She pointed out that the Sangsad Bhaban designed by Luis Kahn
is a unique architectural work, which is the most recognizable
structure in the world.
"No matter where you work, it's your
responsibility to keep the building beautiful and well-protected. You
should also keep it neat and clean and do nothing that damages it," she
said.
Sheikh Hasina also asked the JS officials and employees to properly maintain the new residential buildings constructed for them.
She directed them to be economical in using electricity and water.
The
Prime Minister said her government has taken a plan to construct flats
down to the grassroots level so that the government employees can live
with their families at the workplace.
Sheikh Hasina expressed
satisfaction over the peaceful celebrations of the Pahela Baishakh on
Friday and thanked the law enforcement agencies for their success in
maintaining law and order across the country.
Earlier, the Prime
Minister inaugurated eight buildings -- one for officials and seven for
employees -- having 448 flats, by unveiling a plaque.
The Housing and Public Works Ministry implemented the project at a cost of Tk 218 crore.
