Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Wednesday reiterated that the former Basic Bank's Chairman Abdul Hai Bachchu was involved in the much-talk about loan scandal of the bank.
He directly accused Bachchu for the scandal as the finance ministry's investigation team found his connection in the corruption.
Muhith was addressing an award giving ceremony at Shilpakala Academy in the capital organised by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). He also hands over awards among the members of Corruption Prevention Committee who showed excellence in their work.
Responding to a question the minister said a report has been sent to the ACC where Bachchu's involvement was found.
"The ACC will further make decision about him, let's see what happens, and what steps can be taken," Muhith said adding that the report would not be unveiled for now but some government office will get the report.
Earlier the ACC conducted an investigation on Basic Bank's much-talked loan scandal and filed about 18 cases but Bachchu was not found guilty. Bachchu then fled from accusation of where were brought Tk 3, 500 crore loan scandal against him.
The finance ministry then formed an investigation team about such blame and found him guilty.
Earlier in February 2016, Muhith told Jatiya Sangsad that as many as 27 bankers, who served the state-run-BASIC Bank in different capacities, and 56 organisations were found involved in the Bank's loan scam as per the audit report. He said this while responding to a starred question from opposition-bench member Selim Uddin.
He informed the House that an external audit firm appointed by the Bangladesh Bank and the BASIC Bank submitted a report based on investigation about the scandal. The then chairman of the board of directors of the BASIC Bank Abdul Hye Bachchu was also involved in the corruption, the report said.
