Bangladesh has reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the UN human rights office, pledging cooperation on democracy, human rights protection and institutional reforms.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir reiterated the commitment during a meeting with newly appointed OHCHR Mission Chief in Bangladesh Sabine Magdalena Lauber at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday (November 8).
Kobir highlighted the government's priorities, including good governance, the rule of law, fundamental freedoms and freedom of the press. He also discussed Bangladesh's engagement with UN Special Procedures and the planned visits of two UN special rapporteurs.
He urged the OHCHR mission to align its programmes with the government's priorities and assured Lauber of full cooperation.
Lauber welcomed Bangladesh's constructive engagement and reaffirmed the OHCHR's support for the country's efforts to protect human rights and strengthen institutions.
She is the first chief of the OHCHR Mission in Bangladesh, established under a three-year agreement signed in July 2025.
