Professor Dr. A. K. M. Akther Hossain of the Department of Physics, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), has been elected a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries. His election, effective from 1 January 2027, is an international recognition of his significant contributions to scientific research and the promotion of science.
The official notification was conveyed through a letter dated 5 November 2026 by Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS. In her letter, the TWAS President congratulated Professor Hossain and acknowledged that his election recognizes his outstanding contributions to science and its promotion in the developing world. The formal induction of newly elected Fellows will take place at the next TWAS General Conference.
Professor Hossain is a distinguished physicist and academician with more than three decades of experience in teaching, research, and higher education. He obtained his B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. degrees in Physics from the University of Dhaka, securing First Position in the First Class in his Master's examination. He subsequently earned his Ph.D. from Imperial College, University of London, UK, in 1998, specializing in Experimental Solid State Physics, particularly Colossal Magnetoresistance (CMR). He also undertook postdoctoral research at Osaka University, Japan, under the prestigious Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Fellowship during 2002–2004.
He joined the Department of Physics at BUET in June 1994 and was promoted to Professor in August 2008. At present, he is serving as Professor in the Department of Physics and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies at BUET. He previously served as Head of the Department of Physics and Provost of Titumir Hall, BUET.
Professor Hossain's research has made significant contributions to experimental solid-state physics and advanced functional materials. His major research interests include colossal magnetoresistance, superconductivity, nanostructured ferrites, ferroelectric and multiferroic materials, dilute magnetic semiconductors, nanocrystalline alloys, and emerging functional materials. His research also encompasses the investigation of the structural, electrical, magnetic, and magnetoelectric properties of advanced materials, with potential applications in modern electronic and technological devices.
Throughout his academic career, Professor Hossain has published numerous research articles in reputed international scientific journals and has supervised a substantial number of postgraduate researchers, including 14 Ph.D., 44 M.Phil., and 22 M.Sc. students. His research collaborations .
He is also a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (BAS) and the Bangladesh Physical Society (BPS). His election to TWAS further adds an important international distinction to his academic and scientific achievements.
TWAS is an internationally recognized scientific academy dedicated to promoting scientific excellence and strengthening research capacity in developing countries. Professor Hossain's election to this prestigious international academy is a matter of pride for BUET and the scientific community of Bangladesh. It also reflects the growing recognition of scientific research and academic excellence originating from Bangladesh on the international stage.
