Chandpur district banned Awami League President Nasir Uddin Ahmed was arrested during a special police operation at his residence in the city's Purana Bazar area on Friday (November 6) evening.

Chandpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Fayez Ahmed confirmed the arrest, saying several others were also detained during simultaneous raids across the city.

Additional Superintendent of Police Nadira Noor said the operation was still underway and further details would be disclosed later.

Earlier in the afternoon, unidentified miscreants set fire to the '36 July Martyrs' Memorial' at the city's Shaheed Minar premises. The incident triggered separate protest marches by BNP-affiliated organisations and leaders and activists of 11 political parties.
