The silence of a summer night was broken by the mysterious jingling of anklets. Everyone was asleep, yet someone seemed to be walking or dancing outside the window. Who was there? Where was the sound coming from? Decades later, the mystery of that childhood night remains unanswered.
Some childhood memories never fade. Instead, they remain tucked away in the mind, growing more mysterious with time. Among my earliest memories is an unsettling experience during a summer vacation at my maternal grandmother's house"a night marked by an unexplained sound and a fear I can still recall.
Visiting my grandmother's house was always a pleasure. The warmth of family, the familiar surroundings and the freedom of school holidays made those days special. The house remained lively throughout the day, but after midnight, everything fell silent.
It was on one such night that something strange happened.
It was around half past two or perhaps three in the morning. Everyone in the house was fast asleep, including me. Suddenly, a strange sound woke me.
It was the jingling of anklets outside my bedroom window.
At first, I listened in confusion, still caught between sleep and wakefulness. Gradually, the sound became clearer. It seemed as though someone was walking slowly, wearing anklets. Sometimes the jingling sounded distant; moments later, it seemed to come from just outside the window.
The contrast between the deep silence and the distinct sound made the experience even more unsettling. There were no voices, footsteps or signs of movement anywhere in the house. Only that mysterious jingling disturbed the stillness of the night.
I lay motionless, listening.
Who could be walking outside wearing anklets at such an hour? Was someone dancing? Why would anyone be moving around the house while everyone was asleep?
Beyond the window lay complete darkness. I could see nothing, but the sound seemed to emerge repeatedly from somewhere within it. I imagined an unseen figure moving around the house, sometimes passing the window, sometimes stopping nearby.
Fear and curiosity battled within my young mind. I desperately wanted to discover the source of the sound, but I lacked the courage to look outside. I feared that something even more frightening might be waiting in the darkness.
Unable to bear the anxiety, I woke my mother, who was sleeping beside me.
In a whisper, I said, "Mum, someone is making the sound of anklets outside the window. It sounds as though someone is dancing!"
I expected her to sit up, look outside or investigate the strange noise. Instead, she calmly replied, "Nothing has happened. Don't be afraid. Go back to sleep."
I said nothing more. Holding her close, I gradually overcame my fear and fell asleep again.
Morning brought no explanation. The house looked as ordinary as ever, and the previous night's strange experience seemed almost unreal in daylight. Yet the sound remained firmly etched in my memory.
Many years have passed since that summer vacation. I have grown up, and life has changed in countless ways. Still, whenever I hear anklets jingling or find myself surrounded by the silence of a late night, I am transported back to that mysterious room.
Even now, I wonder what I actually heard. Was someone really walking outside my grandmother's house wearing anklets? If so, who was that person, and what were they doing there at such an unusual hour? If the sound came from something else, why did it seem so unmistakably like the jingling of anklets?
Perhaps there was a simple explanation that I could not understand as a child. The stillness of the night and an active imagination may have transformed an ordinary noise into something extraordinary. Yet the clarity of that memory continues to puzzle me.
Childhood has a peculiar way of turning ordinary experiences into lasting mysteries. We forget countless details of our early years, but certain sounds, images and moments remain vivid long after everything else has faded. Sometimes, it is not the event itself but the unanswered questions surrounding it that keep a memory alive.
I may never discover who made the sound outside my grandmother's window that summer night. The mystery remains unresolved, and perhaps that is what makes the memory so unforgettable.
Sometimes, I wish I could return to that childhood night and hear the strange jingling once more. Perhaps, with the courage of adulthood, I would finally look outside the window and discover its source.
But time never moves backwards. That room, that window and the mysterious sound belong to a distant past.
Even today, in the stillness of a late night, I sometimes imagine hearing that familiar sound again"
Jingle... jingle... jingle...
Was it merely an echo of childhood imagination, or was there something unseen moving through the darkness that night? I may never know.
