Graffiti commemorating the July mass uprising has been erased from the walls of Dhaka College as part of beautification work ahead of the President's visit.

On Friday (November 6), several walls of the college were painted white, covering the murals. The incident has sparked criticism on social media.

However, the college principal claimed that he had no prior knowledge of the removal.

A visit to the site revealed that the July graffiti had been erased from the boundary wall adjacent to Nayeem's Goli and the wall facing Mirpur Road.

Expressing anger over the incident, Nahian Rehman Rahat, president of the Dhaka College unit of the Socialist Students' Front, who led the graffiti initiative, said, "The President's visit is a good thing. But the graffiti cannot be erased from the walls under the pretext of cleaning. The memories, struggles and aspirations of July cannot be erased in any way."

Meanwhile, Mohammad Millad Hossain, member secretary of Dhaka College Chhatra Dal, said beautification work was underway on the campus ahead of the President's visit for the college's founding anniversary.

He said, the walls were not being painted with the intention of removing the July graffiti. Various organisations could repaint the graffiti if they wished, he added.

Dhaka College Principal Professor A.K.M. Elias said, he had not been aware of the matter beforehand. Had he known, he would have instructed those concerned not to remove the graffiti.

"We have no negative instructions whatsoever regarding the graffiti," he said.

Meanwhile, Vice-Principal Professor Anwar Mahmud said, photographs of the erased graffiti had been preserved and the murals would be recreated based on those images.

The Dhaka College unit of Inqilab Mancha has also staged a protest, putting forward four demands, including the restoration of the graffiti.

It is worth mentioning that President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a former student and teacher of Dhaka College, is expected to attend the institution's 186th founding anniversary celebrations.
