The fifth consignment of nuclear fuel reached the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant under strict security supervised by the Bangladesh Army.
The vehicles carrying the uranium arrived at the project site at around 7:30 AM on Friday (6 November). With this arrival, five out of nine planned shipments have reached the project site, following the four consignments delivered by 31 October.
According to sources, Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is supplying nuclear fuel across nine consignments to provide 163 uranium assemblies for the second unit and 48 additional assemblies for the first unit. The remaining shipments are scheduled to arrive by December.
Experimental power generation has already commenced at the plant's first unit following final regulatory clearance from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority. Minister for Science and Technology Fakir Mahboob Anam stated that power supply to the national grid is expected to begin within five to six weeks.
The first unit has achieved 20 per cent thermal capacity, and turbine operation will commence once capacity reaches 35 to 40 per cent. Initial experimental output will supply 300 megawatts to the national grid, with plans to scale production past 1,100 megawatts within the first six months.
Project Director Dr Md Kabir Hossain stated that safety remains the top priority, with rigorous technical checks conducted at every operational phase. Upon full completion of both units, the plant will supply 2,400 megawatts of electricity to the national grid.
