Garment factory owners may enforce a ‘no work, no pay’ policy if the ongoing labour unrest is not brought under control by Saturday.
The decision was discussed at an emergency meeting between Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and leaders of garment exporters' associations at the Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday (November 5).
The business leaders warned that continued unrest could make it difficult to keep factories operational. They sought government cooperation to restore normal production.
According to meeting sources, the government advised factory owners to wait until Saturday. If the situation does not improve and workers fail to cooperate, owners may introduce the policy.
Garment workers have been protesting for several days, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000, disrupting production in major industrial areas.
The government formed a six-member wage board on November 1 to set a minimum wage for garment workers. Despite an agreement to implement a revised salary structure from December, protests continued for a fifth consecutive day on Wednesday.
