Two Arab-led political alliances have backed opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot to form Israel’s next government, strengthening his bid to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Joint List and United Arab List (Ra’am) have jointly recommended Eisenkot, giving him support from lawmakers representing 67 of the Knesset’s 120 seats. The backing puts him above the 61-seat threshold required for a parliamentary majority.
However, forming a governing coalition remains challenging, as some of Eisenkot’s Jewish opposition allies have reservations about cooperating with Arab-led parties. Netanyahu’s bloc, meanwhile, faces difficulties securing sufficient parliamentary support.
The political development could reshape Israel’s governing landscape following the inconclusive election.
