At least six people have been killed and several others injured in a massive fire at a residential building in the Sunset Park neighbourhood of Brooklyn, New York, early Thursday (November 5).
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) said it received reports of the fire at around 1:40AM local time. More than 200 firefighters and emergency medical workers rushed to the scene to extinguish the blaze and provide medical assistance.
Firefighters found flames engulfing the first and second floors of the two-storey building, while the interior staircase had collapsed. The fire was brought under control after nearly three hours of efforts.
According to the FDNY, four people were found dead inside the building, while a man and a woman later died at hospital from their injuries, police said. Authorities have not immediately released the identities or ages of the victims.
Four other civilians and at least three firefighters were also injured in the incident.
The fire department has launched an investigation to determine the cause. New York police said a hazardous materials team was sent to the scene after a lithium-ion battery was found inside the building. However, it remains unclear whether the battery was linked to the fire.
