A man allegedly killed his father by hacking him with a machete in Lohagara upazila of Narail on Thursday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Afsar Sheikh, 60, a van driver. The accused, his son Khairul Sheikh, 26, has been on the run since the incident.
The incident took place around noon at their home in Boyra Dakshinpara village under Lakshmipasha Union of the upazila on Thursday (November 5).
Family members and neighbours said, "Khairul had long been addicted to drugs and frequently quarrelled with his father over money to buy drugs. He also physically assaulted his father for money and occasionally vandalised household belongings when he failed to get it."
Following an altercation with his father over the same issue on Thursday noon, Khairul attacked Afsar with a machete, hacking his hands, chest, abdomen and head, leaving him dead.
Khairul's mother and wife were present at the scene during the incident. He fled the area immediately after the killing.
The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the locality.
Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shariful Islam said, police were trying to arrest the fugitive Khairul Sheikh.
The body has been sent to the morgue of Narail District Hospital for an autopsy. It will be handed over to the family after completion of legal procedures, he added.
