Police have stated that Jubo Dal leader Shaker Hossain was shot and killed by hired assassins following a dispute over the division of gold looted during a robbery in Magura.

So far, 11 individuals have been arrested in connection with two separate cases, one concerning this sensational murder and the other regarding the gold robbery. Authorities have recovered 61 bhori and 6 ana of gold, along with a vehicle that was used in the commission of the robbery.

Most recently, Golam Zahid, the expelled president of the district Swechasebak Dal, was arrested, and the court has granted a two-day remand for his interrogation. Superintendent of Police (SP) Molla Azad Hossain shared these details during a press conference held at the Magura Police Lines on Wednesday afternoon (November 4).

According to police, on the morning of October 21, Shaker Hossain, a leader of the municipal Jubo Dal, was shot at the 'Royal Paribahan' counter located at the Magura municipal central bus terminal; he later succumbed to his injuries. While there was initial uncertainty and speculation surrounding the motive for the murder, the investigation uncovered a startling link to a gold robbery.

Police revealed that a gold robbery, which took place on October 6 in the Ramnagar Bazar area of Magura Sadar, was orchestrated by former municipal Swechasebak Dal convener Maruf Hossain and Jubo Dal leader Shaker Hossain. A group of 12 to 15 people was involved in the operation, during which approximately 150 bhori of gold were stolen.

A dispute then arose between Maruf and Shaker over the distribution of the looted gold, which, according to the preliminary investigation, led to Shaker being shot and killed by hired assassins.

Regarding the case, SP Molla Azad Hossain stated that an organized criminal group is behind both the murder and the gold robbery. The investigation has confirmed that the conflict stemmed from the division of the stolen gold. Police are currently working to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in these incidents.

Meanwhile, the victim, a gold trader named Md. Mojibor Rahman, whose gold was stolen, has alleged that although he filed a written complaint on October 15, the police did not initially treat the matter with the necessary seriousness. Left with no other options, he eventually lodged a complaint with the DIG of the Khulna Range.

Meanwhile, Sharmin Nahar Ruma, the wife of the deceased Shaker Hossain, has demanded exemplary punishment for everyone involved in her husband’s murder.

So far, the police have arrested 11 individuals in connection with two separate cases, one for murder and the other for gold robbery. Those arrested in the murder case include six people: Golam Zahid, the expelled former president of the district Swechasebak Dal; Maruf Hossain, the former convener of the municipal Swechasebak Dal; Roni Shikdar, a member of the Dhaka Metropolitan South Jubo Dal’s convener committee; Shamima Tabassum Lubna; and gold traders from Jhenaidah, Animesh Majumdar and Bashir Ali.

In the gold robbery case, seven individuals have been arrested: Golam Zahid (expelled former president of the district Swechasebak Dal), Maruf Hossain (former convener of the municipal Swechasebak Dal), Md. Jewel Hossain, Choukir Ahmed, Farid Mondal, Milton Molla, and Marufa Akter.

According to the police, 61 bhori and 6 ana of gold have been recovered out of the approximately 150 bhori that were stolen; a significant portion of the remaining gold is yet to be found. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the hired killers who directly participated in the murder.
