Preliminary results from the United States midterms indicate that Democrats are leading in several seats previously held by Republicans, raising concerns that President Donald Trump's party may lose control of Congress.

If Democrats secure a majority in the House of Representatives, they will gain the power to block Trump's legislative agenda and launch comprehensive investigations into his administration.

According to NDTV, vote counting is underway in several states, including Ohio, Georgia, and North Carolina. This election will determine the balance of power in Congress for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's tenure in the White House.

Data from the BBC shows that out of the 35 contested seats in the 100-member Senate, results for nine seats have been declared. Overall, Democrats hold 43 seats, while Republicans hold 31. In the House of Representatives, results for 52 seats have emerged so far, with Democrats securing 36 seats and Republicans 16. A total of 218 seats is required to achieve a majority in the House.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera reports that Democrats have won 43 seats in the House, compared to 19 for Republicans, while leading in 99 and 69 seats respectively, with 205 results still pending. In the Senate, Democrats have secured 43 seats and Republicans 32, with Democrats leading in seven additional seats and Republicans in six, while 12 Senate results remain unannounced. Securing a majority in the Senate requires 51 seats.

Early projections have triggered anxiety among several Republican Party (GOP) leaders, who fear a strong performance by Democrats. A Republican official in Georgia told CNN that multiple campaigns are worried about voter turnout, expressing doubts over whether they can secure enough votes against Democrats in tight Senate and gubernatorial races.

If Republicans lose their majority in the House, Democrats will be empowered to stall Trump's legislative plans and initiate widespread investigations against his administration. Defeat in the Senate would similarly threaten Trump's authority to appoint Supreme Court justices and senior officials.

Amid rising living costs and the conflict involving Iran, public opinion against Republicans has soured rapidly. Consequently, the election results are being viewed nationwide as a referendum on Trump's presidency.

The midterm elections involve all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 seats in the 100-member Senate, and gubernatorial races across 36 states. Democrats need a net gain of just three seats to reclaim the House majority and four seats to capture the Senate, raising the possibility that Republicans could lose control of both chambers.

Achieving a Senate majority remains a tough challenge for Democrats. Republicans currently hold a 53-47 majority in the chamber. However, widespread public dissatisfaction has fueled tight contests even in reliably conservative states like Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Ohio, and Alaska.

At the same time, Democrats face challenges retaining competitive seats, including in Michigan, where internal party bitterness led Congresswoman Haley Stevens to endorse Republican Mike Rogers over Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

Final forecasts by Decision Desk HQ project that Democrats could win 241 seats in the House against 194 for Republicans, while anticipating a narrow 52-48 Democratic majority in the Senate.
