Observer Online Report
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to end the United States’ annual $4 billion military assistance to Israel by the end of this year, claiming he has reached an understanding with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the move.
Trump made the remarks during a phone interview with Fox News programme ‘Fox & Friends’.
In the interview, he said the United States provides Israel with $4 billion in military assistance every year and that he had reached an agreement with Netanyahu several months ago to end the funding. The assistance would be phased out by the end of this year, he added.
Asked why the aid was being withdrawn, Trump said Israel no longer needed the money.
However, the US president did not specify which forms of military assistance would be affected. The US State Department did not immediately comment on the announcement.
US military assistance to Israel has long been a contentious issue in American domestic politics. Disagreements among US lawmakers over support for Israel have intensified, particularly following its military operations in Gaza.
In July, a proposal to halt military assistance to Israel was introduced in the US House of Representatives but was rejected by 314 votes to 104. Notably, nearly half of the Democratic lawmakers supported ending the aid at the time.
