A violent confrontation broke out between India's Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and local residents in Ashabari area under Kalamchoura Police Station in Tripura on Monday (November 2), leaving at least three BSF members and several villagers injured.
According to Indian daily The Hindu, the clash erupted after local villagers accused BSF members of physically assaulting a resident of the area.
Local sources reported that around 10:00 AM on Monday, BSF personnel were clearing jungle brush near the Nutanbazar road adjacent to the Ashabari Gram Panchayat. During the operation, security personnel detained a local resident identified as Hefzur Rahman, son of Shahjahan Miah, on suspicion of illicit activity.
Villagers alleged that BSF members severely beat Hefzur Rahman during interrogation, fracturing one of his legs. Protesting the incident, angry locals blocked the Ashabari-Rahimpur road near Nutanbazar and demanded immediate punitive action against the responsible BSF personnel.
During the road blockade, an operational vehicle belonging to the 49th BSF Battalion—carrying Company Commander Rohit, driver Sunil Kumar, and BSF member Manjit—was intercepted by the crowd while traveling from Rahimpur toward Boxanagar.
Citing eyewitnesses, the Tripura Times reported that demonstrators attacked the BSF vehicle with sticks and bamboo poles, physically assaulting the personnel inside and dragging them onto the road. All three BSF members sustained injuries during the attack.
Upon receiving news of the escalation, additional BSF personnel from the nearby Ashabari border outpost alongside Kalamchoura police units rushed to the scene to restore order.
The injured BSF personnel were initially rushed to Boxanagar Hospital and later transferred to Tripura Medical College & Dr. BRAM Teaching Hospital in Agartala for advanced treatment.
Counter-complaints have been registered with the local police by both sides. Senior BSF officials inspected the site, and an investigation has been initiated to determine the precise sequence of events, though tension remains high in the area.
