According to local sources and police, workers from several surrounding garment factories took to the streets in the morning to demand wage increases. At one stage of the demonstration, the agitators blockaded the road and set fires on the thoroughfare.
As tensions escalated between the protesters and security forces, police deployed tear gas shells and sound grenades to disperse the crowd and clear the highway.
Following the confrontation, heavy contingents of additional police personnel were deployed throughout the Narsinghapur belt to prevent further violence, leaving the area in a state of high tension. Production at several nearby garment factories was temporarily suspended due to the unrest.
