Power division offers reward for information on transformer thieves

The Sreepur Sales and Distribution Division of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has announced a reward for anyone who helps identify and apprehend transformer thieves amid a surge in thefts in Sakhipur upazila of Tangail over the past two months.

The division conducted public awareness campaigns through loudspeaker announcements across different areas of the upazila throughout Monday, urging residents to help prevent transformer thefts. Executive Engineer of the Sreepur Sales and Distribution Division Md Enamul Haque confirmed the initiative.

According to the division, electricity is supplied to Sakhipur and adjoining areas through 17 feeders. Several transformers have recently been stolen from different locations, including Kochua in Kalia Union and Indarjani-Bhatgora in Kakrajan Union.

Locals alleged that thieves dismantle transformers under the cover of darkness and steal copper wires and other components. The thefts have disrupted electricity supply and caused considerable hardship for consumers, triggering concern among residents.

Kamruzzaman, a resident of Kochua village, said he found the transformer casing lying beside an electricity pole one morning, with all its internal wires and components missing.

Hafizur Rahman of Indarjani village said the theft had left many families in the area without electricity.

Speaking about the situation, Executive Engineer Md Enamul Haque said several transformers and other electrical equipment had recently been stolen from different parts of the upazila.

He said the loudspeaker campaign was aimed at preventing further thefts and raising public awareness, adding that anyone who helps catch the thieves will receive a handsome reward.
