At least 26 people were killed in a Russian bombing attack targeting a humanitarian aid distribution center in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region on Monday (November 2), prompting President Volodymyr Zelensky to denounce the strike as extremely horrific.

Maikhailo Semykin, head of the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, stated that the casualties occurred in the village of Komyshuvakha after at least nine 3,000-kilogram bombs struck the site, leaving five individuals injured and 27 initially reported missing.

President Zelensky explained that Russian forces first hit a local school being utilized for humanitarian aid distribution before launching a second strike on a nearby shelter where people were seeking refuge.

Emergency services initial reports confirmed 24 deaths, including two rescuers and four police officers, before Zelensky verified during his nightly video address that the death toll had risen to 26.

Zelensky noted that Russian forces were aware that remaining local residents gathered at the facility every Monday to collect essential humanitarian relief, arguing that the assault demonstrated Russia's refusal to de-escalate the conflict.

The Ukrainian president referenced a recent successful joint operation that safely evacuated civilians from the Russian-occupied southern city of Olesfky through a temporary ceasefire brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump.

Zelensky remarked that while brief moments suggested peace might be attainable through diplomatic steps, Russia's continued killings delivered the opposite message.

The attack comes as delegations from Ukraine, Russia, and the United States prepare to resume peace negotiations in the coming days, following the suspension of talks in February.
