Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has retired from international cricket at the age of 38.
He has also stepped away from first-class and List A cricket. Maxwell will keep playing for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League. His contract with them runs until the 2027-28 season.
Maxwell retired from ODIs in June last year. He had kept the door open only for international T20s. He also played in this year’s T20 World Cup, where Australia failed to get past the group stage.
Australia played their last match of the tournament against Oman in February. It was also Maxwell’s last match for the country. He took two wickets and did not bat.
Maxwell spoke on the Final Word podcast. “There were many discussions between us before and after the T20 World Cup,” he said. “They were quite open. There was no pressure from the team (Australia’s team management), and we decided to keep the door open. There were a few series coming up, and they were looking to the future. We saw that in Bangladesh. The boys got their chance and were performing really well.”
Maxwell has won the ODI World Cup twice. He hit the winning runs in the 2021 T20 World Cup final. He had thought he might play for his country at home one last time.
“I think there was a slim hope, or some talk, that I might get a farewell match at the MCG,” he said. “But I fully understand the path they are taking with this squad. With the Olympics coming in 2028, I think a lot will change in the next 12 to 24 months. They have to make sure they keep an eye on some of the young players coming through, and that those players face international pressure that perhaps no one else can.”
Maxwell played 130 T20Is for Australia. He scored 2,897 runs and took 51 wickets. His five centuries in the format are a world record, shared with Rohit Sharma.
He played seven Tests, the last in 2017. He scored 339 Test runs, with a best of 104 against India in Ranchi.
In 149 ODIs, Maxwell scored 3,990 runs. His best was an unbeaten 201. He hit four centuries and 23 fifties, and took 77 wickets.
