Man held with 1.66kg gold paste gets five-day remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Mohammad Minhaj on a five-day remand in a case filed over the alleged smuggling of 1.662kg of gold paste concealed in his rectum at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasan Shahadat passed the order after hearing a 10-day remand plea filed by the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md Habibul Hasib of Airport Police Station.

According to the case documents, Minhaj, a resident of Raozan in Chattogram, was detained on November 1 while preparing to board a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight (BG-127) to Abu Dhabi.

Acting on a tip-off, customs intelligence officials detained him at the airport and took him to a clinic in Uttara for an X-ray examination. The scan reportedly detected gold paste concealed in his rectum.

Officials later recovered three egg-shaped pieces of gold paste, weighing 454 grams each, from his underwear. The seized gold paste weighed 1.662kg and was certified as 24-carat gold. It is expected to yield around 1.260kg of refined gold, with an estimated market value of Tk 2.12 crore.

In the remand petition, the investigation officer alleged that Minhaj had concealed information about his links to an international gold-smuggling syndicate and provided inconsistent statements during preliminary questioning.

Investigators sought his remand to identify other members of the network, its alleged masterminds and the sources and channels of the smuggled gold and related funds.

Assistant Revenue Officer Md Safayet Ullah Bhuiyan of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Circle filed the case with Airport Police Station under the Special Powers Act.
