Religion Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaykobad has accused a political party of exploiting the spirit of the July uprising for its own interests, saying the Awami League had long used freedom fighters for political gain.

He made the remarks while addressing a cheque distribution ceremony at the Muradnagar Upazila Parishad Complex in Cumilla on Monday (November 2).

The minister said, “We do not want to do business with these issues. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that everyone will be given due respect. People from all professions, classes and religions must be treated with dignity. At the same time, we must uphold the core objectives and aspirations of the July spirit and move forward on the path of national development and progress.”

He also urged everyone to remain vigilant so that no individual or group could use the Liberation War or the spirit of the July uprising for political or personal gain.

“The country's history, freedom fighters and the spirit of people's movements must be upheld with due respect,” he added.

At the programme, the minister distributed Tk 500,000 from his personal fund among freedom fighters and another Tk 500,000 among financially disadvantaged members of the Hindu community, totalling Tk 1 million.

Among others, Muradnagar Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sakib Hasan, Muradnagar Circle Superintendent of Police Kamruzzaman, Muradnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, Bangra Police Station OC Shafiul Alam, Muradnagar Upazila BNP convener Mohiuddin Anjan, member secretary Molla Mojibul Haque and joint conveners Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan, Abdul Aziz Molla and Nazrul Islam were present.
