Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed authorities concerned to strengthen advance preparedness, identify vulnerable buildings, and enhance emergency rescue capabilities to tackle potential earthquake risks across the country.
He issued the directives on Monday (November 2) while presiding over a high-level meeting on earthquake preparedness and actionable strategies held at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Hasan Shiplu stated that PM Tarique Rahman stressed the urgent formulation of an integrated action plan to ensure public safety in earthquake-prone regions, including the capital city of Dhaka.
The Prime Minister also prioritized identifying old and high-risk structures, strictly enforcing the National Building Code for new constructions, and expanding quick-response rescue capacities during disasters.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman emphasized that effective coordination among relevant ministries, local government bodies, Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK), the Fire Service and Civil Defence, and other emergency response agencies is vital to minimize casualties and damage during natural disasters like earthquakes.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of securing key infrastructure—such as hospitals and educational institutions—ensuring adequate rescue equipment, providing advanced training for rescue personnel, and building widespread public awareness regarding earthquake safety protocols.
The meeting was attended by Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shah Alam, RAJUK Chairman Engineer Riazul Islam Riju, alongside senior officials from relevant ministries and agencies.
