Following the publication of the HSC and equivalent examination results on Saturday, (October 31) data from the University Grants Commission (UGC) reveals that the total seat capacity across public universities and affiliated institutions exceeds the number of successful candidates.

For the 2026-27 academic session, a total of 10,82,288 undergraduate seats are available across 54 active public universities and their affiliated colleges. However, only 6,46,685 students passed the HSC and equivalent exams this year—meaning over four lakh seats will remain vacant nationwide.

Addressing concerns over eligibility and stringent admission criteria, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque noted that individual universities retain the autonomy to adjust entry requirements. He assured that all passed students will have the opportunity to secure higher education enrolment.

Re-Examination Policy to Increase Pass Percentage

To support students who failed in one or two subjects—totaling 4,22,905 candidates—the Ministry of Education has announced plans to hold retake examinations within one month of the result publication, eliminating the need to wait an entire academic year.

Welcoming the decision, National University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A.S.M. Amanullah stated that introducing re-examinations aligns with global educational standards.

He anticipated that the combination of retake exams and re-scrutiny processes could boost the overall HSC pass rate by up to 10 percentage points, allowing thousands more students to qualify for university entry.
