The government plans to build playgrounds in 4,599 unions across the country within five years to expand sports facilities at the grassroots level, Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque said on Saturday.
He made the announcement while visiting Rangpur Shaheed Abu Sayeed Stadium.
The minister said three to eight bighas of government-owned land would be developed as playgrounds in each union.
He also announced plans to modernise district stadiums, introduce indoor sports facilities and swimming pools, and launch a sports calendar covering 15 disciplines from January next year.
He said 40 talented participants from the first edition of 'Notun Kuri Sports' would receive long-term education and training at the Bangladesh Institute of Sports Education (BKSP).
