Poor performance in English and Higher Mathematics has contributed to a sharp decline in this year's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination results under the Cumilla Education Board, with the overall pass rate falling to just 48.04 per cent.
A total of 92,162 students appeared for the examinations under the board this year. Of them, 44,272 passed, while 1,313 secured a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 5.00.
The results were announced on Saturday by Professor Dr Shafiqul Islam, Controller of Examinations at the Cumilla Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, at the board's conference room.
Explaining the poor overall performance, the examination controller said a large number of students failed in English and Higher Mathematics, significantly affecting the board's overall pass rate.
He also revealed that 15 educational institutions under the board recorded a zero per cent pass rate, meaning none of their candidates passed this year's examinations.
In contrast, all students from four institutions achieved a pass, securing a 100 per cent pass rate.
The examination controller said seminars had already been organised with representatives of institutions that performed poorly to discuss the reasons behind their results and identify ways to improve academic performance.
He expressed hope that these initiatives would help improve the board's overall results in future examinations.
