The floating body of a local Awami League leader was recovered from the Louhajang River near his home in Mirzapur on Friday (Octber 30) night, several hours after he went missing while fishing, with his family alleging he was murdered.

The deceased, identified as Yunus Al Murshed, 48, was the president of Awami League’s Ward 9 unit under Mirzapur municipality and a resident of Kanthalia village in the upazila. He leaves behind his family and numerous colleagues who are shocked by his untimely demise.

According to local sources and family members, Murshed had gone to a spot near the river bank adjacent to his residence around 7:30PM on Friday to fish using a traditional 'Dharmajal' (fishing net), a routine activity for him. His family became concerned when he did not return home by evening and began searching for him.

Later that evening, family members discovered his body floating in the river. They subsequently recovered the body and brought it back to their residence before informing the police.

The death has raised serious questions among locals and family members, with many expressing doubts over whether it was an accidental drowning or a premeditated killing followed by disposal of the body in the water. The family pointed out visible injury marks on the body as evidence of foul play.

A local resident, Shaminur Mia, noted that using a Dharmajal does not require a fisherman to enter the water. He also mentioned that witnesses had seen Murshed fishing just before evening. He further stated that upon recovery, serious damage was observed to Murshed’s eyes and one of his ears.

Former municipal councillor Afzalur Rahman Shanu described Murshed as an excellent swimmer, adding that it was inexplicable how he could have drowned in water that was only chest-deep.

Confirming the incident, Abdullah Al Mamun, Officer-in-Charge of Mirzapur Police Station, stated that no official complaint had been lodged regarding the matter as of yet. He assured that appropriate legal action would be initiated upon receipt of a formal complaint from the family.
