A 10-year-old madrasa student allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself with a scarf tied to a ceiling fan in Dhaka's Hatirpool area on Friday evening.
The deceased, Abu Hasan, was the son of Md. Islam Uddin from Itna upazila of Kishoreganj district. He lived with his family in a rented apartment in the Hatirpool-Kathalbagan area and was the second of three siblings.
According to the victim's maternal uncle, Md. Raihan, Hasan had been suffering from mental health issues since childhood and was restless and indifferent. He had struggled to stay at madrasas both in Dhaka and back in his village, leading his father to bring him back to live with the family in Dhaka a month ago.
On Friday around 6:30 PM, while family members were away, Hasan locked himself in a room and hanged himself. Relatives spotted him through a window gap, broke open the door, and rushed him to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) emergency department, where duty doctors declared him dead around 7:00 PM.
DMCH Police Camp In-Charge (Inspector) Habibur Rahman confirmed the death, stating that the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy and the local police station has been informed.
