Russian drone strike kills 14 in Ukraine

At least 14 people have been killed and several others injured in a Russian drone attack on two passenger trains at a railway station in Ukraine’s Dnipro city on Thursday (October 29).

Dnipropetrovsk regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said six of the injured were in critical condition, including an 11-year-old child. One injured person had both legs amputated.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as horrific and urged Kyiv’s allies to take action.

He said a regular passenger train and a local train were standing at the platform when the attack took place. Images released by Ukraine’s emergency services showed burnt trains, shattered windows and bodies lying on the platform.

French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Antonio Costa condemned the attack and called for increased pressure on Russia.

Meanwhile, at least six more people were killed in separate Russian attacks in other parts of Ukraine. Two 15-year-old girls died in a drone strike in Chernihiv, while three people were killed in an attack on a residential building in Kremenchuk. A six-year-old child was among those injured.

Zelensky also criticised the easing of some US sanctions on Russia, accusing Moscow of continuing attacks on civilians despite the relaxation.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway to resume ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine. Representatives of the two countries are expected to meet next month under US mediation.
