Veteran British actor Sir Patrick Stewart, renowned for his roles in the *Star Trek* and *X-Men* franchises, has died at the age of 86. His family announced that he died at his Los Angeles home on October 28, following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
In a statement shared on Thursday, his family said Stewart passed away surrounded by his wife, Sunny, and loved ones. They remembered his final moments as being filled with music, prayer, tears and laughter, reflecting the deep affection he inspired throughout his life.
Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside Stewart in the X-Men films, paid tribute to his friend and co-star. Jackman, who played Wolverine while Stewart portrayed Professor Charles Xavier, shared photographs of the actor and remembered the lessons he had learned from him.
“We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days,” Jackman wrote.
Filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo, known as the Russo Brothers, also expressed their sadness at Stewart’s death. They recalled the privilege of working with an actor they had admired since childhood, praising his talent, integrity and contribution to audiences.
Marvel Studios paid tribute to Stewart for his portrayal of Professor X, a character whose humanity and intelligence helped define the role for generations of fans. The studio remembered him as an exceptional talent, a generous collaborator and a gentleman, while extending condolences to his family and fans worldwide.
Stewart is also expected to appear in the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, potentially marking his final on-screen appearance. His performances across the X-Men films, including Logan, and the Star Trek franchise established him as one of the most recognisable actors in science fiction and superhero entertainment.
