World Audio Drama Day is being observed on Friday (October 30), celebrating the art of storytelling through sound and recognising the contribution of audio drama to entertainment and culture.
The day commemorates the historic radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds by Orson Welles on October 30, 1938. The fictional account of an alien invasion was presented in the style of a news bulletin, making some listeners believe the events were real.
Initiated by audio drama enthusiast Patience “Sibby” Wieland, the first celebration took place in 2013 to mark the 75th anniversary of the landmark broadcast.
Audio drama combines dialogue, music, sound effects and narration to bring stories to life without visual elements. From traditional radio plays to modern podcasts and digital productions, the medium continues to attract audiences worldwide.
The day highlights the enduring power of imagination and the voices behind audio storytelling.
