Four jailed over prostitution in Jamalpur

A mobile court has sentenced four people, including a woman and an alleged broker, to jail in Sarishabari upazila of Jamalpur on charges related to prostitution.

The court sentenced the alleged broker, Mohar Uddin, 80, to three months in jail, while the woman, Afroz, 35, and two clients, Fazlu Mia, 38, and Osman, 45, were each sentenced to one month.

The mobile court was conducted by Liza Richil, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate, on Thursday.

According to sources, Mohar Uddin had allegedly been renting a house in the Tariapara area of Sarishabari municipality and bringing women from different places for prostitution for a long time.

Locals detained the four on Thursday afternoon while the alleged activities were taking place. The mobile court subsequently handed down the sentences.

Sarishabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Iqbal Hossain confirmed the matter, saying preparations were underway to send the convicts to jail.
