Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained nine people, including three Indian nationals, while they were allegedly attempting to cross into India illegally through the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah.

The detainees were arrested early Thursday during a routine patrol by the Shrinathpur Border Outpost under the BGB’s 58th Battalion. Maheshpur Police confirmed the incident at around 2:30pm.

The three Indian nationals were identified as Shibani Singh, 27, daughter of Jagadish Singh of Hosenpur village under Dhanatala police station in West Bengal’s Nadia district; Debkumar Biswas, 33, of Sonatala village under Nakashipara police station in the same district; and his daughter Debashree Biswas, 14.

According to police, they had visited relatives in Bangladesh and were attempting to return to India by crossing the border illegally.

The six Bangladeshi detainees were identified as Shubhajit Das, 24, of Bishnupur village in Kotalipara, Gopalganj; Dulali Biswas, 37, of Dumuria village in Tungipara, Gopalganj; Anjana Shil, 19, of Rajihar village in Agailjhara, Barishal; Purnima Mridha, 20, of Ganakpara village in Nesarabad, Pirojpur; Bashir Molla, 36, of Anantapur village in Maheshpur, Jhenaidah; and Tanzil, 34, of Dakatia Uttarpara in the same area.

According to police and BGB sources, a patrol team led by Habildar Abdul Aziz conducted an operation near border marker 61-R following a tip-off. The nine were detained beside a bamboo footbridge over the Ichhamati River in Haldarpara village, around 300 yards inside Bangladesh.

Munshi Imdadur Rahman, assistant director (media) of the BGB’s 58th Battalion in Maheshpur, said the detainees had been handed over to Maheshpur Police.

Maheshpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Imran Alam said the identities of the three Indian nationals had been verified. He added that cases would be filed against the detainees before they were produced before a court.
