A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced lawyer Mobarak Hossain Mohon to three years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually harassing a woman who lived in the same house in the capital’s Wari area.
Judge Muntasir Ahmed of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 also fined him Tk 5,000, with an additional month of simple imprisonment in default, said public prosecutor Shahina Akter.
Mohon appeared before the court for the verdict. After pronouncing the sentence, the judge issued a warrant for his imprisonment and sent him to jail.
According to the case documents, the accused repeatedly made improper advances towards the woman, who was the wife of his wife’s cousin. On August 20, 2017, he allegedly grabbed her from behind near the kitchen of their residence on Bhajohari Saha Street in Wari.
The woman filed a case with Wari Police Station the same night. Police submitted a report accusing Mohon on September 30, 2017.
The trial began on April 1, 2019, after charges were framed. The tribunal recorded testimony from 12 of the 16 witnesses during the trial.
