A court has ordered the imprisonment of Sub-Inspector (SI) Ismail Hossain, currently posted at Indurkani Police Station in Pirojpur, and former officer-in-charge (OC) of Shalikha Police Station in Magura, Biplob Kumar Nath, in a murder case over the killing of BNP leader Mashiur Rahman in Shalikha. Pirojpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the development on Thursday.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Shalikha Amli Court in Magura sent the two accused to jail after rejecting their bail petitions. Judge Barnali Rani passed the order when they were produced before the court.

According to police sources, SI Ismail Hossain was arrested late Tuesday night while serving at Indurkani Police Station in Pirojpur. On the same day, Magura District Detective Branch (DB) police arrested former OC Biplob Kumar Nath, who was posted to the Barishal River Police. Both are named accused in the case. Ismail's village home is in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga.

Investigation Officer Inspector Kamruzzaman said the case statement alleges that on February 15, 2015, Biplob Kumar Nath, then OC of Shalikha Police Station, and SI Ismail Hossain took Mashiur Rahman from his home in Chhoygharia village under Shatakhali Union of Shalikha upazila.

Mashiur Rahman was vice-president of Ward No. 1 of the BNP in the union. He was allegedly shot dead later. At the time, the incident was recorded as a “crossfire” killing, and a case was filed with Shalikha Police Station.

The victim's wife, Hasina Begum, filed a murder case with the court on October 1, 2024, accusing several people, including former OC Biplob Kumar Nath and SI Ismail Hossain. Following a court order, the case was registered with Shalikha Police Station and an investigation began.

Inspector Kamruzzaman said investigators obtained some important information from the accused during preliminary questioning after their arrests. However, he declined to disclose further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Local residents and the victim's family have alleged that the two police officers were involved in killings of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami leaders and activists in different districts during the Awami League government's tenure, allegedly portraying the incidents as “crossfire” encounters. They also accused the officers of extorting money by using such threats. These allegations, however, could not be independently verified.

Repeated phone calls and text messages seeking comment from Magura Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain went unanswered.

Shalikha Police Station OC Md Ashikur Rahman said senior officials could take action against the two officers, but he had not been informed of any such decision.

Indurkani Police Station OC Md Mahabbat Khan said he was not authorised to provide details on the matter.

Pirojpur SP Mohammad Talebur Rahman said Ismail had been arrested in connection with a case filed with Shalikha Police Station in Magura and confirmed that he had been serving at Indurkani Police Station.

Notably, former OC Biplob Kumar Nath is the son-in-law of Mohit Kumar Nath, president of the Awami League's Jashore Sadar upazila unit. The arrests and subsequent jailing of the two police officers mark a new development in the investigation into Mashiur Rahman's murder.
