Netflix has released the first full trailer for its six-part adaptation of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice, starring Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet and Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy. The series is set to premiere on December 3.
The trailer offers a glimpse of the romance, family tensions and misunderstandings that shape the story, while highlighting the social pressures faced by women in the early 19th century, when marriage often determined their future.
Olivia Colman plays Mrs Bennet, who is determined to find wealthy husbands for her five daughters, while Rufus Sewell portrays Mr Bennet. The supporting cast includes Freya Mavor as Jane Bennet, Daryl McCormack as Mr Bingley, Louis Partridge as Mr Wickham, Jamie Demetriou as Mr Collins and Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
The trailer follows Elizabeth and her elder sister Jane as they discuss their futures at Longbourn. Elizabeth considers the limited choices available to women, including becoming a governess, remaining unmarried or marrying and raising a family.
It also hints at the growing attraction between Elizabeth and Darcy through their encounters at social gatherings and a moment at the piano, setting the stage for the pride, misunderstandings and emotional tension central to their relationship.
Written by Dolly Alderton and directed by Euros Lyn, the series aims to offer a fresh perspective on Austen’s much-loved novel while retaining its social commentary and central romance.
The new adaptation follows several previous screen versions, including the acclaimed 1995 BBC miniseries starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, and Joe Wright’s 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
