Turnover at the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) exceeded Tk 560 crore on Thursday (October 29), despite a decline in all major indices as share prices of most listed companies fell. Meanwhile, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) saw its indices rise amid a mixed performance, although turnover dropped sharply.

At the DSE, share prices of most companies and mutual funds declined, extending the market's losing trend to four of the last five trading sessions. In contrast, the CSE witnessed gains for the second consecutive trading session.

The DSE opened Thursday's session on a positive note, with share prices of most listed companies and mutual funds rising. The indices initially moved upward and remained positive during the first half-hour amid fluctuations. However, selling pressure intensified as the session progressed, pushing most share prices lower and dragging all major indices into negative territory by the close.

At the end of the session, shares and units of 145 companies advanced, while 190 declined and 53 remained unchanged.

Among companies classified as 'A' category, generally comprising those paying dividends of 10 per cent or more, 81 advanced, 94 declined and 20 remained unchanged. In the 'B' category, comprising companies paying dividends below 10 per cent, 23 gained, 40 fell and six remained unchanged.

In the 'Z' category, which includes companies that have failed to pay dividends, share prices of 41 companies rose, 55 declined and 27 remained unchanged. Meanwhile, prices of 15 mutual funds increased, three fell and 14 remained unchanged.

The DSEX, the benchmark index of the DSE, dropped 15 points from the previous session to settle at 5,417. The DS30 index, comprising 30 leading companies, fell nine points to 2,086, while the DSES Shariah index declined three points to 1,050.

Despite the broad-based decline in share prices, turnover at the DSE rose to Tk 564.62 crore, up Tk 123.67 crore from Tk 440.95 crore recorded in the previous session. The latest turnover was the highest since October 11.

Prime Bank led the turnover chart, with shares worth Tk 15.94 crore changing hands. BRAC Bank ranked second with turnover of Tk 13.20 crore, followed by Matin Spinning at Tk 10.77 crore.

Other companies and funds among the top 10 by turnover were Baraka Patenga Power, Saiham Textile, Summit Alliance Port, Shahjibazar Power, Prime Finance First Mutual Fund, Pubali Bank and Sonali Aansh.

At the CSE, share prices of 90 out of 182 traded companies and mutual funds advanced, while 71 declined and 21 remained unchanged. As a result, the CASPI, the exchange's broad-based index, gained 46 points.

However, turnover at the CSE fell to Tk 17.94 crore from Tk 58.40 crore in the previous trading session.
